Our Wilderness Fire Kit contains a traditional set of time-tested fire-starting tools. With proper technique, this kit may be used to start a fire in almost any weather.
The fire-starter is built from three components; a ferrocerium rod, magnesium, and a steel striker. When struck with the flat edge steel scraper, the ferrocerium rod (a synthetic pyrophoric alloy), will shower heavy streams of hot sparks into your magnesium tinder. Magnesium shavings are extremely flammable, reliable, and easy to ignite in both wet and dry conditions. The smooth sanded beechwood handle has been lightly oiled to prevent the wood from drying, shrinking, or cracking. A leather lanyard ensures that the flat edged top grade steel striker is always at the ready. In addition to the firestarter rod, the following items are also included in this kit:
Fatwood
Fatwood is resin-rich highly flammable wood, cut into small sticks, designed to be used as fire tinder. In difficult fire starting, fatwood sticks, chips, or shavings are a reliable high performance tinder.
Beeswax Candle
The 100% beeswax candle has a long burn time, and is ideal for maintaining a small slow burning fire for assistance with tinder lighting.
Matches
The Helko Werk matchbox includes USA-made high sulfur matches. If the conditions are right, relax and start your fire the old fashioned way with a Classic box of matches.
Jute
The 11 inch jute cord is highly flammable and very helpful at starting fires as a slow and steady burning tinder.
Aluminum Tin
All tools can be easily stowed in the convenient lightweight aluminum tin.
