Traditional Line
Hand-forged German Heritage axes
Helko Werk's Traditional line is a premium collection of handforged German heritage axes. Each piece is handcrafted by one of Helko’s Master Smiths - lifelong artisans of metalcraft. The Smith uses tongs on an open face drop forge to shape the head one at a time, with no two pieces exactly alike. These axes give their user the experience and feel of an old-world hand tool, with the reliability that comes from rigorous modern German manufacturing standards. The handles are smooth sanded and finished with boiled linseed oil. Each axe includes a vegetable tanned leather sheath and a bottle of our Axe Guard Head Oil.

The Rheinland pattern - a traditional German wide-bit blade - is exceptionally well suited for cutting work. Handmade in Wuppertal, Germany, these hatchets are named after the region’s famous Rhein River Valley. The Rhein was a historically significant source of trade and growth for settlements in the region throughout the medieval period, and cutting axes like these were a daily necessity for people carving out towns and villages in heavily forested regions along the river. These hatchets perform well at limbing branches, making kindling, carving, and other light and fine cutting work.

The Hessen Woodworker is a midsize, traditional German cutting axe, light enough for any user to handle comfortably. The 2 ¾ lb Rheinland pattern axe head has a sharp, slim, wide-bit blade that will outperform most American pattern felling axes at cutting work. The pattern is named after Germany's famous Rhein River Valley, a heavily forested region where cutting axes like these have been in use for centuries. This axe is suited for felling small and medium sized trees, and can also be used for splitting smaller firewood. Slightly too big to carry along on weight-conscious backpacking trips, the Hessen is better suited as a base camp axe, or for longer excursions where it can be stowed in a canoe, raft, or vehicle.

The American inspired Hinterland Double Bit is a capable, highly effective felling tool, suited for large timber. If inclined, the user is able to profile each blade differently and may use, for instance, one edge for splitting and the other for cutting. Traditionally, one bit was used for heavy work that was prone to dull the blade, while the other was kept with a finely honed edge. When the logging industry was still reliant on axes for felling trees, one side of the double bit was commonly used to chop undercuts for large timber, while the other was held in reserve for fine cutting.
